At the weekend Liam Winder travelled to Derby to compete in the English 4* event.
On the Saturday Liam competed in the Cadet Open and Cadet Banded event. In the Open he qualified through his group and had a fantastic result in the last 64 against a player much higher ranked than himself. He then meet one of the top players (Luke Savill) in the last 32. Liam lost out 3-0 but worked hard in a very difficult match. In the Cadet banded event Liam had a fantastic match against the number 1 seed in the banded event but sadly he lost out in this match 3-2.
On the Sunday Liam played in the Under 18 Open and Banded event. In the Open event Liam lost to Dominic Sussex 3-0 and the number 34 seed in the event 3-2. These were two tough matches for Liam yet he battled hard and won the final match in his group 3-0. In the Banded event he won one and lost one in his group. The match he won was 3-1 bbut lost out to the number 40 player at the event 3-0.
These are excellent events for Liam to attend as he gains valuable match experience against much stronger opposition in England. Well Done Liam and keep up the hard work.
History
Ferndale Table Tennis club was first established as a TTk Greenhouse academy in 2007. The academy was overseen by Welsh International player Stephen Gertsen he was at the academy for 3 and a half years and had great success during his time here. Then ex-Scottish Junior International player Scott Johnston who was assistant coach at old TTk school Tonypandy and had previously helped Stephen with his coaching duties at Ferndale took over. Scott was in the position for a year. Scott moved on but the club has again managed to get a new coach who is going to continue to allow the club to grow. Gwyn Carvill from Bridgend TT club has now taken over at the school and will hopefully use his knowledge of the game and links within welsh table tennis to help the club go from strength to strength.
