This weekend saw the second and final weekend of Junior Welsh League take place in the Jubilee hall at WIS. The weekend was always going to be tough for both teams as the first team continued to push for a top 3 finish in division 1. The second team were out to show that the first weekend was a bad one and that they were much better than there bottom place in division 2. With Steven Fawkes absent the first team had Chris, Liam and Ethan. The second team were missing Jaymz Tutton and he was replaced by Jamie Davies, who joined Dylan and Charlotte.
The 1st team opened up there weekend with two very difficult games. The first was against Ael-Y-Bryn. The team once against struggled and lost out 6-1. The only win coming from Chris against Alex O'Connell. It could of been 5-2 but Ethan lost out 11-9 in the 5th to Beth Roberts.
The 2nd team recorded their first win of the campaign by beating Rhondda C 4-3. At the end of the doubles the team was 3-1 down with Charlotte beating Ben Evans. The next 3 matches saw a complete turn around with Dylan beating Carys Webster 3-0, Jamie beating Ben Evans in the 5th and Charlotte recording an excellent win against Welsh international Soffi Jenkins 3-1.
The second round of matches saw the 2nd team lose out to a very strong Swansea side 7-0 but there were multiple chances in the match that the team could not convert to make it a closer battle.
The 1st team were against Rhondda A. The team lost out 5-2 with the wins coming for Ethan against Nicole Hall and in the doubles. This game could of been a completely different affair as Chris lost out in two 5th end battles to Alex Prosser and Connor Edwards. Chris was just unable to convert his chances when in winning positions but Chris has years on these older players and should hopefully learn from this.
Sunday morning saw an excellent round 3 for both the 1st and 2nd team. The 1st team won 7-0 against North Gwent A. North Gwent A had called up a player from there 2nd team but still had a strong team but the boys played very well to only drop 3 sets in the whole match.
The 2nd team had Y Morfa and with them being joint bottom of the league table this was going to be a crunch match. From the very first set in the first match the team showed how determined they were and won another match in comfortable fashion. Another fantastic result for Charlotte Slye as she beat another Welsh internationalist, Kate Roberts, 3-1.
Round 4 saw Ferndale A against Bridgend A. Once again the boys showed great composure to record a comfortable 6-1 win. The only loss occuring when Ryan Oyler beat Liam 3-1. Chris was determined to show that his Welsh Nationals performance was no fluke result and that he can win tough battles as he fought back from 2-0 down to beat Ryan Oyler in the 5th set.
The 2nd team were against North Gwent B. The team once again combined to show a fantastic performance and won with an excellent 6-1 result. The only defeat came when Jack Cole beat Charlotte 3-1. Dylan and Jamie both stepped up in this match to beat Ryan Lo and for Dylan to beat Jack Cole.
The final matches of the weekend were sadly both defeats for the teams. Ferndale A had a disappointing result against Rhondda B losing 4-3. Chris played well to beat Jac Jenkins and Callum Evans both 3-0. Ethan won against Jon Bisp 3-0 but continued to have a mental block against Jac Jenkins. The match went down to the final game between Liam and Jon Bisp but sadly Liam could not get his game going and lost out 3-1.
The 2nd team were against 2nd place Cathays and lost out 5-2. The match was very close going in to the doubles and Charlotte and Dylan had the chance to win the doubles, and if they had the match would of been completely different, but sadly they lost and this seemed to drain all confidence out of the team with the two wins coming against Gethin Jones.
Overall it was a good weekend for Ferndale. The A team finished 3rd in the division behind two very strong teams (Rhondda A and Ael-Y-Bryn). The B team finished 5th in the division but performed very well all weekend and had they performed like that in the first weekend they could of been very close to the top of the league. There were 3 excellent results again with Chris beating Ryan Oyler for a second time in a row. Charlotte also turned a lot of heads with her performances against Kate Roberts and Soffi Jenkins.
History
Ferndale Table Tennis club was first established as a TTk Greenhouse academy in 2007. The academy was overseen by Welsh International player Stephen Gertsen he was at the academy for 3 and a half years and had great success during his time here. Then ex-Scottish Junior International player Scott Johnston who was assistant coach at old TTk school Tonypandy and had previously helped Stephen with his coaching duties at Ferndale took over. Scott was in the position for a year. Scott moved on but the club has again managed to get a new coach who is going to continue to allow the club to grow. Gwyn Carvill from Bridgend TT club has now taken over at the school and will hopefully use his knowledge of the game and links within welsh table tennis to help the club go from strength to strength.
